A Day Without Plastics Mallory Filko Discussion 311

A Day Without Plastics

Discussion 311

My Mission: To last an entire day without using plastic. Can I do it? Probably not but it’s worth a try.

So, I chose a weekend day to do this challenge so that I would not have to use my phone (composed of plastic) to wake up. I chose a Sunday because those are usually my laziest days. My goal was to do as little as possible so that I would not use any plastic.

I naturally woke up at the late hour of 12:00. Knowing that my toothbrush was plastic, I brushed my teeth with my finger for the day. Normally, I would have felt a bit uneasy about doing that, but I knew I probably would not be leaving my house that day, so it did not bother me.

I was feeling the Christmas spirit but knew if I used my computer that would be using plastic, so I got my roommate to find a Christmas movie and play it on my computer so that I could watch it but did not have to use it. I watched two movies this way.

For food, I used glass plates and glass cups to eat my food off of for lunch and dinner. My coffee was put in a coffee mug but unfortunately I early on broke my challenge when I added milk from a plastic container to my coffee.

Another aspect I could not avoid was using my cell phone which is made up of plastic. There was really no way around that one.

I specifically showered the next morning instead of that day so that I would not have to use the plastic bottles that my soap, shampoo and conditioner are made up of.

To end my night, I actually got my roommate to read my econ questions, which had to be done online, out loud to me as I verbally answered them so that I did not need to use my computer.

I think I did fairly well not using plastic but if it had been during the week where I actually needed to accomplish things, it definitely would have been impossible. It was until attempting this challenge that I realized how hard it is to go for even a few hours without using plastic.
