Plastics Challenge... Or at Least an Attempt

Ryan Czaplewski-- TA Grade, Tiffany

Doing the plastics challenge was a lot more difficult than I had once thought… The night before I went over a quick schedule as to what would be acceptable for this challenge and whatwouldn’t. Since my alarm clock is all plastic I figured the first thing I must do is go to bed early that way I could wake up at a normal time. The challenge was made quite a bit easier this way since I slept something like 14 hours and I ended up waking up around 1 in the afternoon, lucky for me I started the assignment on the weekend.

The first challenge arose when I thought about how I would start to get ready for the day. Since the shower doors in my dorm are made of plastic… I figured that using the shower would be cheating, so I just continued on without one. But then I realized that I couldn’t brush my teeth either… so I just threwon clothes that I had laid onz my bed the day before. Looking in the mirror, I realized that if I were to go outside and interact with anyone today, I would have to do something about my hair. To get over the bed head look I threw a beanie on since the comb I own is completely plastic. Then I decided to go take a walk outside.

Not knowing exactly what I should do for the day I took a stroll down to the union and sat on the terrace in the 30 degree weather. Looking around me, I saw people with plastic cups of coffee and I was very tempted to go inside and get a cup myself, but I wanted to make sure I did this plastics challenge for the entire day. After sitting on the terrace and freezing basically… I went to five guys and got a burger. Now at the time I thought I was being smart since I remembered that they give you the food in paper bags, but once I got my burger I realized that I had made a mistake. The burger I had was completely incased with foil and plastic, so I had to have the person sitting next to me open the plastic wrapping on the burger so I could eat it (you don’t know how many people I had to ask before someone actually did it for me).

After the lunch extravaganza I returned to my dorm and decided I should probably get started on some homework. Unfortunately I realized that my calculus book has a plastic binding… but I decided to open it up and just work on it anyways. I usually do my homework in the basement of my building but since the only chairs they have down there are plastic, I decided that I would just work in my room on my wooden desk and chair. Also, when doing my homework I like to use a dry erase board to do calculations on that way I save some paper, but since the white board and the markers are plastic, I just used a wooden pencil and a lot of paper. Several hours later I became hungry again, so I had my roommate order us a pizza. Unfortunately I have trouble going a day without soda so at the end of the night I was sitting in my room watching the Packer game, while eating pizza and drinking a coke. Well… I almost made it an entire day without plastics.

At the end of the day I thought I did a pretty good job without using plastics. I did everything I could think of to avoid it including waking up late to avoid eating a meal. I knew not using my cell phone or laptop wouldn’t be a problem as much as eating would, but I did avoid plastic for at least one meal. Also, in order to take some of these pictures I had to use a camera… so in a way I guess I failed the challenge even from the get go.
